Kenya is one of the legends of the speciality coffee world. While coffee growing here has a shorter history than in places like Ethiopia, Kenyan coffees have quickly earned a reputation for their precise processing and exceptionally clean flavour profile. Kirinyaga County lies at the foot of Mt. Kenya and is considered one of the best growing regions in the entire country. The name 'Kirinyaga' means 'mountain of whiteness' in the local language, after its snow-capped peaks. The Kii Factory, run by the Rungeto Farmers Cooperative Society (FCS), was established in 1995 and today brings together over 850 smallholder farmers. Each farmer cultivates an average of 250 coffee trees on less than one hectare of land. The meticulous work, strict sorting, and gentle processing are reflected in the exceptionally complex and clean taste of this coffee.
What does this coffee taste like?
This coffee is fully washed. After being hand-picked, the cherries are carefully sorted and pulped. Fermentation lasts approximately 16 to 24 hours, depending on the ambient temperature. The coffee is then washed with clean water from the Kii River and soaked for another 12 hours to achieve perfect clarity of flavour. All the water used is purified in natural filtration pits before being returned to local waterways. After washing, the parchment coffee is dried on raised beds for about 14 days. The drying is slow and even, with the beans protected from overheating during the day and from moisture at night. In the cup, you’ll discover citrus, fresh raspberries, and a smooth touch of cocoa butter. The coffee is juicy, complex, and elegant, with a clean body and a long, harmonious aftertaste. A typical Kenyan character – bright, distinctive, and unmistakable.
