What is Microsoft 365 and what does it offer?

You may know Microsoft 365 under the older name Office 365. It's a yearly office office suite subscription, where in exchange for regular payments you always get the latest version of all apps. Despite the name change, Microsoft 365 has the same price, login, and features as Office 365. It lets you create text documents, spreadsheets, charts, presentations, and more.

Microsoft 365 apps

Microsoft 365 subscription includes a wide range of useful programs designed to simplify all productive activities at work, at home and on the go. Let's take a look at the main software features.

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word is a text editor for working with text documents. Its enhanced features now allow you to translate text into a foreign language, check grammar and spelling, and  find resources for your essay if you are a student. You can also enhance your documents with pictures, various fonts or graphs, or practical charts from Microsoft Excel.

Microsoft Excel

Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint is a popular tool for preparing presentations for any situation. Easy templates, animations and transitions mean the tool can be easily mastered by almost any user and it's an effective way to capture and keep your audience's attention. The voice recording function for instance allows teachers to prepare engaging remote schooling lessons for their students, but the range of possible uses is of course much broader.

While PowerPoint lets you create dazzling presentations, Microsoft Publisher specialises in easy creation of posters, greeting cards, or other graphic designs.

Microsoft Outlook

Microsoft Outlook is a useful combo of a personal e-mail client, calendar, and contacts. It also includes a free app for iOS and Android, ensuring you can take your communication and work always with you. Microsoft Outlook can even secure and encrypt your e-mails to protect your data.

Microsoft OneDrive

Microsoft OneDrive is a secure cloud storage for all your important data that you frequently access or simply don't want to lose. It allows you to work on a document from anywhere or share it with a colleague and work on it together at the same time - just share the link with them and you're done.

Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams is a great app for collaboration between multiple people. Allows you to create group meetings, calls and chats with a complete overview of all shared files. In addition, you can work on all documents together in real time.

For communication with family and friends, we recommend Microsoft Skype, which offers free chat and voice and video calls from your PC, smartphone and Xbox game console.

Microsoft 365 special licences

Microsoft also offers special office suites for schools and large enterprises. These comprehensive subscription plans guarantee Microsoft 365 apps for every teacher, student or employee. In addition, companies can get data analysis and extra security programs, and schools can get Minecraft: Education Edition.

Large Enterprise Licences - Microsoft 365 vs. Office 365

The existing Office 365 line of subscription services is now aimed exclusively at large businesses and organisations -  mainly Office 365 E1, E3 and E5 plans - but they also have a Microsoft 365 equivalent. Microsoft 365 plans offer several additional services as well, such as Microsoft Intune Workplace Management, enhanced Windows 10 Enterprise, Windows Analytics, advanced security, and more.

Microsoft 365 vs. Microsoft Office 2019

In addition to the one-year subscription plan, Microsoft also offers a one-time licence called Microsoft Office 2019. The price is higher, but you get permanent ownership. However, the disadvantage is the lack of updates (you only get security updates instead of brand-new features) and OneDrive cloud storage.
