What's the story behind it?
iRobot originated from the conviction of three founders (Colin Angle, Helen Greiner and Rodney Brooks) that robotics will one day change the world and the way we work, learn, cure or clean. Already in the first year of its existence, iRobot introduced the space exploration robot Genghis in cooperation with NASA. The big breakthrough came in 1998, when iRobot won a DARPA contract to develop and manufacture tactical mobile robots named iRobot PackBot. It was this versatile robot which was deployed by the US government during the rescue work after terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001. PackBot was also used to map contaminated areas after the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster in Japan in 2011.
In 2002, the first Roomba robotic vacuum cleaner was introduced to the world, and with it, iRobot became a part of our lives. Three years later, iRobot introduced the Scooba and continued developing new robotic assistants.
