ContinueBlu-ray Discs are the third generation of optical discs for storing digital data. The data is stored in a spiral track 0.1 mm below the surface of the disc, with a track cross distance of 0.35 microns. Blu-ray discs are read using laser light with a wavelength of 405 nm. The technology was originally developed by the Japanese company Sony, with contributions from other companies such as Philips. The disc name derives from the color of light used to read the media.
Like CDs, Blu-ray discs have a diameter of 12 cm, 8 cm for the mini variation, and a thickness of 1.2 mm. Blu-rays can hold up to 25 GB of data on single-layer discs, 50 GB on double-layer, and up to 80 GB on double-sided dual-layer variants. Due to recording 0.1 mm below the surface, these discs can be used with hybrid DVD drives and Blu-ray recorders. Blu-ray reading devices are also compatibile with CD and DVD formats.
