The AMD Ryzen 5000 series is firmly anchored to the AM4 socket, similar to the first, second or third generation Ryzen processors. However, you need a motherboard with a matching chipset. The major changes primarily occurred directly in the processor cores. The redesign of the internal layout of the CPU cores inside the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X processor is fundamental. They are now concentrated in 8-core CCX (Core Complex) blocks, which have direct access to the L3 Cache with twice the capacity.
Clearly the most interesting benefit of the new Ryzen is the performance increase. This is really noticeable in the form of up to 19% IPC (number of instructions per CPU clock). This number came out for AMD as an average across 25 applications, so it's not an isolated increase in a pre-prepared situation.
