Camera Resolution (Sensor)

Usually indicated resolution

  • Mpx – the number of dots (pixels) that make up the final image (eg. 10 Mpx)
  • The number of horizontal and vertical points (eg. 3 872 x 2 592 pixels)

By multiplying the number of horizontal and vertical points you obtain the total image resolution in pixels, i.e. megepixels. 10 Mpx cameras shoot images at a resolution of 3872 x 2592 px (10,036,224 px or 10 Mpx) with a maximum print size of 21.7 x 32.4 cm.

Ordinary resolution cameras range from 10-14 Mpx.

Other indicated resolution

  • Dpi - number of dots per inch  (ie. 2.54 cm)
  • Lpmm - the number of black and white lines per millimeter

Advantages and disadvantages of high resolution

  • The ability to print large format photos
  • More precise details in photographs
  • Better for cropping images
  • Photos take up a large amount of data on the memory card
  • Saving photos on the memory card takes longer
  • Higher demands on the optical quality of the lens
