Choosing a gaming chair - why does my posture matter when playing?

If you have to sit for a long time, try to do it in a way that is healthy for your body. Healthy sitting means that you have to move around — dynamic seating. The more time you spend in the chair, the more important it is for the chair to be able to adapt to your body and back. Dynamic seating doesn't lock you into a single stiff pose, but makes sure to exercise your core muscles. This useful function is supported by chairs with a multi-lock mechanism.

How are gaming chairs different from office chairs?

What is important when choosing a gaming chair?

Mechanism Type

Multi-lock - Chairs with this mechanism can be locked and unlocked in a reclined position. If you prefer to recline in your seat without rocking back and forth, this system lets you do that. Chairs with a multi-lock system support healthy dynamic seating, so we recommend you consider one of these if you game often.
Tilt - If you want the chair where you can lock the rocking mechanism, choose a tilt system. You can easily switch between a rocking chair mode and a classic chair. If you spend a few hours playing every day, go for a chair with some sort of a tilt mechanism.
Rocking - The biggest advantage of this type is the relatively low price. However, this is reflected in its limited flexibility, as you can't adjust the angle of the seat or backrest. Your body and back will therefore have to stay in same position for a long time, which is neither comfortable nor healthy. We recommend chairs with a rocking mechanism if you don't plan to spend hours in them every day.

Adjustable Backrest and Lumbar Support

Ergonomic backrests copy the shape of the human spine. A big plus is also the lumbar support, which is adjustable in more expensive models. The backrest supports your back at multiple points, alleviating the strain. Chairs without lumbar support will eventually force you to sit in a rather unnatural, stooped pose, which in the worst cases may even deform and permanently damage your spine. For models without lumbar support you can buy special support attachments, sold separately.

If the backrest allows height adjustment, you will be able to adjust it to match your height for better comfort.

Upholstery Type

Gaming chairs are typically upholstered with artificial leather, mesh, or polyurethane. Artificial leather looks cool and stylish, but things will probably get sticky and sweaty in summer, however, especially if you don't play in an air-conditioned room. On the bright side, it's very easy to clean by simply wiping it with a cloth. Care for the leather regularly with the right conditioner or other suitable product.

In summer, you will appreciate the light and breathable mesh or fabric upholstery. This can prove to be a disadvantage in winter, however.

Polyurethane is a combination of PVC and PU and it is both highly breathable and durable.

Armrest Design

Choose a chair with adjustable armrests, especially if you play often and intensively. We divide them into adjustable armrests and 2D, 3D and 4D variants. What is the difference between them?

Adjustable armrests - only allow height adjustment.
2D armrests - you can adjust the height and rotate the top part in a sideway angle.
3D armrests - height adjustment, backward/forwards, and by sideway angle.
4D armrests - everything from the 3D variant as well as right/left.

Some gaming chairs are sold without armrests, but they can be purchased separately later.

Synchronous Tilt Mechanism

The chairs with the most advanced synchro tilt mechanism will constantly copy your sitting position. The chair automatically reclines back and forth to match the position of your back, adjusting the seat pan and backrest in sync.

Asynchronous Tilt Mechanism

Chairs with an asynchronous tilt mechanism are notable for their great flexibility. They usually use three levers, which adjust the chair height, backrest angle, and the seat pan angle. This makes them very ergonomic and means they support the so-called dynamic seating, making you constantly change the sitting position and relieving stiffness and back strain.

Dynamic Seating

Dynamic seating is a healthy, natural way of sitting so different from the usual stiff and motionless sitting posture. With dynamic seating, your position is constantly changing, either by rocking back and forth or by changing the angle between the seat and the backrest, so you exercise your core muscles and avoid getting locked into one pose.
