Cobi 5757 II WW Horten Ho 229 1:32
Build a model of the Horten Ho 229, one of the most unusual aircraft of the Second World War. The model is designed in a 1:32 scale and its size corresponds to other aircraft released in the Historical Collection, World War II. The Horten Ho 229, also known as the Gotha Go 229, was a German experimental jet aircraft intended to change the rules of aerial combat. Created during the Second World War as Germany sought to turn the tide of the conflict in its favour, this aircraft was one of the “Wunderwaffe” (miracle weapons). The design, developed by brothers Walter and Reimar Horten, featured a unique flying wing design, which made the Ho 229 one of the first examples of a stealth-type aircraft – difficult to detect by radar. Towards the end of the war, American intelligence captured two examples of the aircraft – one in the process of being assembled (Ho 229 V3) and an older model, the unpowered Horten Ho IX V1 glider. Between 2008 and 2009, Northrop Grumman carried out a complete reconstruction of the aircraft. Although this version was not capable of flying, electromagnetic studies showed that in 1945, the aircraft could have been detected by a British radar station at a distance of 130km, which was about 80% of the detection range of a Bf-110 fighter. Although the Second World War ended before the Horten Ho 229 design was fully developed, the aircraft will forever remain one of the most fascinating and enigmatic chapters in the history of aviation.
