In Castle Nine, you take on the role of an influential player whose goal is to recruit the best characters and build them into a powerful 3×3 card grid. Each character, whether from the castle, or from under the castle, brings unique abilities that will activate immediately after she is hired, as well as specific conditions for scoring at the end of the game. Strategically place your characters and keep an eye on the herald figure, which determines from which location characters can currently be hired.

Nine moves, one winner: keys, herald and smart card purchase

The game ends when each player has played his nine turns and has placed all nine cards in his grid. The winner is the one who can accumulate the most points with their choices. During your turn, you can optionally use the key to move the herald to the opposite location or to change the card menu, giving you access to new strategies and combinations. Then you must buy one of the available cards, use its effect, and finally move the herald to complete the menu. You can also take a free card face down to get gold and keys, but without the point benefit at the end of the game.
