Betzold Growing box - earthworm house
Betzold Growing box - earthworm house
Watch the hard-working earthworms at work in the Betzold earthworm house. They are unassuming but extremely important, not very pretty animals crawling out of the ground in rainy weather. Earthworms ensure fertile soil by their activity underground. They eat their way through the ground, leaving long, deep tunnels behind them. This will loosen and aerate the soil and make it more fertile. With the box, your children can watch the busy earthworms at work. You can experience first-hand how the colourfully mixed organic material becomes humus that can be used to fill pots and sow flower or herb seeds. Children learn about the natural cycle of nature and understand how everything is connected.

How it all works
Layer different types of soil in the pot. Clay or pebbles, soil, sand and rotten leaves or grass are suitable. Feel free to use different coloured soil layers, so you can better observe the mixing of the soil layers. The last top layer consists of leaves or grass and possibly onion skins. Find or buy earthworms and put them in a box. Darken the box with the included plug-in panels. Earthworms are very sensitive to light and only activate in the dark. To observe from time to time, simply remove the plates. Place the box of earthworms in a cool place. After a few days, children can observe changes. After the observation phase, carefully release the earthworms into the wild. After use, just wipe the box with a damp cloth and use it for the next round.
