It is not possible to repair a joystick that has lost its original rubber sleeve. It *CAN* be repaired if most of the original sleeve remains (80% of the circumference, when replaced with a smooth one it dropped to 50% and there is still enough material to keep it from flapping). I recommend using the smooth ones straight away. The ones with the lugs look like they will have better traction, but after a few hours of use it' s more like acupuncture, even the smooth ones are sufficient.
rescuing an older driver for a few crowns
sleeves with spines are a trap, quite unpleasant after a few hours of use
surprisingly hard, they are difficult to take off if you change your mind about which set you want and the original sleeve suffers
