A lens that was originally meant to be a compromise until I got GM2 glass. How terribly wrong I was. Since I have experience with the original first generation OSS version, I was hesitant all afternoon after the purchase to get a different glass than what was reviewed, as the first generation really served more as a compromise version for the GM f/2.8, on all levels. What I got is a truly premium glass with superior drawing quality over virtually the entire zoom range, with the top half of the range having the best drawing with minimal defects. The F4 aperture is thus seen by most people as a concession to reduce price and weight, but here it is more of a concession to enhance features, where the lens is tuned for incredibly short focusing distances and really should be described as a macro. With the teleconverter it is an absolutely superb macro. Considering that I can also use the full potential of Sony bodies with it at 30 FPS, it is the best all-round telephoto lens I have ever held in my hands. The image output is also appreciated by 61Mpx chips. The autofocus is extremely fast and accurate, dare I say the same as on the GM2, but there will be a definite difference in performance in lower light, as the difference between F4 and F2.8 is one full stop of light, and this will of course show up as more hesitation and inaccuracy on the autofocus in lower light conditions. However, I'm not afraid to say that bodies with high refresh rate autodetection (120 Hz) will cheer with joy, I cheer even with 60 Hz on my A7V. Truly a huge intergenerational shift, and I don't currently know of a more reliably focusing lens on the market for Sony bodies besides the GM2. In time, when the GM2 arrives, this lens will definitely not be leaving home, as it will remain a versatile travel companion for artistic work such as macro, as well as its lighter weight. I was very pleasantly surprised by this piece.
