A word of warning for anyone thinking of buying a Lenovo laptop with Ryzen AI chips. I thought I’d be able to run a local AI model of at least 22GB. The reality is that you can only allocate 4GB to the GPU in the BIOS. If you try to change this setting via AMD Adrenalin or via the advanced BIOS, it won’t work (the changes won’t take effect). The best solution, therefore, is to set the BIOS to 4GB instead of the default 0.5GB. The result will be that the total RAM will be 32–4 = 28 GB. The GPU may use up to 50% of the RAM – that is, 14GB – probably due to Windows or the Lenovo framework. That works out at 14+4=18GB of VRAM. Unfortunately, that’s as far as we can go. It’s a real shame, because the potential for a further 6GB is definitely there. Unfortunately, however, Lenovo has decided to spoil this user experience for no good reason. Of course, it never occurred to me to look up this information, so I bought it on the assumption that it had ‘shared’ memory.

The only thing I’m not happy with is that the Lenovo charger, which Alza recommended for this laptop, is actually labelled by the laptop itself as slow, and when I’m running a more demanding application, the battery percentage drops even when it’s plugged in.
