I returned this machine the moment I found out that the SMART variant consists in the fact that it can only be controlled via the app and you still need a couple of thousand from Gardena Smart Gateway and I really did not want to waste my time and nerves with it after reading the instructions. So instead I bought the LCD version (Gardena Home Watermaker 5000/5E LCD), which is exactly the same except for the control and I am very satisfied with it. It's also a few thousand cheaper and can be up and running in ten seconds. The SMART option probably makes sense if you already have the aforementioned GATEWAY or you plan to build a Gardena irrigation system or you are an electronics enthusiast etc.: -)
