Methylfolate (methylfolate) is a biologically active, naturally occurring form of folate (folic acid - vitamin B9) that is used for basic bodily functions such as normal cell division.

Unlike conventional folic acid, methylfolate has been shown to penetrate the blood-brain barrier. The patented form of methylfolate contained in Quatrefolic® has demonstrated bioavailability that is higher than that of dietary folate. It is also often used to support the prenatal development of the child and to promote healthy hematopoiesis. The human body cannot make vitamin B9, so it must be obtained from food or supplements. Folic acid supplementation increases folate levels in pregnant women. Low folate levels in pregnant women are a risk factor for neural tube defects in the developing fetus. It is important to supplement especially during the period from the first month before conception to the third month of pregnancy.
