With the Eagle and the Lion I.

Over the three centuries of the military chaplaincy's existence in the Austro-Hungarian and Czechoslovak armies, many dozens of Czech priests passed through its ranks. They performed their service faithfully and honestly, even as their lives were affected by all the dramatic twists and turns of turbulent historical events. This publication presents the work of the military chaplaincy from its earliest days up to 1919 and aims to acquaint the reader with prominent figures of the military clergy and their work in different time periods. From a broader perspective, it touches on other topics of ecclesiastical history, such as the relationship between church and state or the very presence of clergy in the army. Special attention is paid to the Austrian navy, the First World War, the fighting in Slovakia, and, for the very first time, the chaplains in the Czechoslovak foreign legions.
This book is followed by a second volume presenting the functioning of the chaplaincy in the Czechoslovak army between 1918–1950 and the military priests whose work left an indelible mark on its history. Among them are generals and simple priests, whose ranks also include victims of Nazi persecution and the post-February 1948 regime. Both parts are accompanied by several dozen unique, previously unpublished photographs.
