Winter People
The second edition of Jennifer McMahon's first horror bestseller
The small town of West Hall in Vermont, USA, is shrouded in legends. People disappear under strange circumstances, and its residents are plagued by all sorts of tragedies.
In the winter of 1908, just a few weeks after the tragic death of her daughter Gertie, Sara Harrison is found murdered in the field behind her house. Rumour has it among the locals that Sara's ghost walks the town streets after dark, and people leave gifts on their doorsteps in the hope that she will leave them in peace. Nineteen-year-old Ruthie Washburne has never paid much attention to the tall tales told in West Hall. She grew up on a remote farm with her mother, Alice, and younger sister, Fawn, and has always dreamed of one day leaving the sleepy town to escape the influence of her eccentric mother, who forces the family to live outside of society, without the internet and with an unlisted telephone number. But one morning, Ruthie wakes up to find her mother has vanished without a trace. She begins to wonder if her mother's strange lifestyle might have had a deeper reason after all.
