Winter bees
I miss the bees. They have been oppressed by hateful armies.
A former grammar school teacher writes a diary at the end of the Second World War. A delicate novel full of contrasts - the silence of bees and Nazi fanatics, loneliness and the longing for love.
It is the last months of World War II. Egidius Arimond, a former high school Latin and Greek teacher, lives alone in the small town of Kali near the Belgian border. His main hobby and only source of income is beekeeping. Besides his passion for bees and beautiful women, Egidius also inherited epilepsy from his ancestors. In Nazi Germany, the disease was a stigma for him, for which he was suspended from his teaching post and forced to be sterilized. However, the threat of euthanasia still looms over him, from which he is protected by his brother Alphonse, a Luftwaffe air ace. As one of the few men not called to the front, he takes advantage of the situation and seduces one woman after another. But it hides an even more dangerous secret: thanks to his excellent knowledge of the rugged terrain of the borderlands, he helps persecuted Jews escape to Belgium. Scheuer has written a delicate anti-war novel full of contrasts - the silence of bees and Nazi fanatics, loneliness and the longing for love.
