Kate Shugak #6
KATE SHUGAK HUNTS FOR THE MURDERER OF HER RELATIVE AT A CONVENTION OF ALASKAN NATIVE TRIBES.
Autumn has arrived on the reservation, and with it, the cool, crisp air. Private investigator Kate Shugak wants to enjoy the quiet October weeks at her remote homestead, but her grandmother Ekaterina, the formidable matriarch of the Shugak clan, has other plans for Kate.
Anchorage is hosting the Alaska Federation of Natives convention, and besides shopping and gossip, representatives from all associations face a very important decision. Important enough to cast a shadow of suspicion over the recent death of one of the board members.
Kate has always kept her distance from politics, but the deceased was her relative, so she reluctantly allows herself to be drawn into a whirlwind of intrigue, lies, and secrets, embarking on an investigation that will lead her to a crossroads between the traditional and modern worlds. It will also show her just how tied she is to her native land and what she is willing to do for it.
DANA STABENOW
Dana Stabenow was born in 1952 in Anchorage, Alaska, and grew up on a fishing boat where, between bouts of seasickness, she wrote stories about 'normal' children growing up on the mainland and forced her mother to read them. She studied journalism at the University of Alaska and then set off on a four-month backpacking trip around Europe. After returning, she worked for Alyeska Pipeline and British Petroleum. In her thirties, she decided she didn't want to spend her life at the beck and call of oil tycoons and would rather become a poor writer. She promised herself she would publish her first book before she was completely broke, and she just barely managed it. In 1991, her debut novel, Second Star, was published, and a year later, the first volume of the popular Kate Shugak series, A Cold Day for Murder, which won an Edgar Award in 1993.
LUCIE JUŘIČKOVÁ
She comes from an artistic family and was born in Plzeň, where her father František Juřička (*1927) worked as a radio director. For his civil stance and active involvement in 1968, he was eventually persecuted and ended up as a political prisoner during the Normalisation period. Lucie Juřičková's mother, Marie Grafnetterová (*1933), was a long-time star of the operetta company at the J. K. Tyl Theatre in Plzeň as an actress and singer. After graduating from the conservatory, she got her first engagement at the Jiří Wolker Theatre in Prague. She has worked in various Prague theatres. She is currently engaged at the National Theatre. Besides theatre, she is mainly involved in voice-over work. Her husband is the actor Martin Zahálka, who is also active in voice-over work.
