War in the Arctic
In the eighth volume of the Half-Forgotten Wars series, the renowned non-fiction author explores lesser-known chapters of the Second World War – combat operations in the Arctic. These took place during the most terrible world war, which proved that our planet is already too small for anyone, and which gave the word 'global' a terrifying new meaning for the first time. Weather reports from the 'kitchen of European weather' in Greenland or Svalbard were then worth their weight in gold – or rather, in the blood of the pilots and sailors of their armies. The air force and navy needed high-quality meteorological reports like nothing else, and so the snow- and ice-covered regions of the cold and inhospitable Arctic became the scene of a small, largely secret, but thoroughly important war. This war, however, had a significant impact on major military operations, such as the Allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944 or the German offensive in the Ardennes in December 1944.
