Wanderings with Dad
Wanderings with Dad is a fictional novel with strong autobiographical elements. Its backbone is the journey of an adult son with his aging father to America - a journey in search of an ancient dream, a supposed ideal of freedom and places familiar from beloved books that shaped both protagonists. It is not, however, a mere trip, but a journey into previously unreachable distances, the real purpose of which turns out to be a search for a way to each other and a return to family memory and long-silenced questions.
Episodes from the trip are folded like snapshots in an old album. They open up old wrongs, inherited traumas, and slowly, subtly move towards understanding and rapprochement. The novel traces the joys and burdens of the changing relationship between parents and children at different stages of life, touching sensitively on the themes of ageing, the fragility of personal happiness and the responsibility of the individual towards those closest to them.
The narrator combines personal and family story with literary context, insight into history and non-violent reflection on the contemporary world. The text thus becomes layered, carried by figurative language, subtle irony and occasional tasteful sarcasm. Wanderings with Dad is a book about memory, the journey and late reconciliation - with others and with oneself.
