The year is 1941. The Nazis occupy Amsterdam, the beloved city of Professor Josef Held. He soon discovers that his former pupil Michael Blum is trying to escape the Gestapo. So she offers him shelter in her attic. In the silence and darkness of this hideout, Michael tells him about his beautiful and fearless girlfriend Elke. He insists that not even the Nazis will divide them. But Michael is of Jewish descent, while Elke is not. Outraged at the rules of the cruel German occupiers and remembering his own broken heart, Josef desperately wants to give Michael and Elke's love a chance.
