Under the sign of the eagle

Historical adventure novel by Siman Scarrow from the Cato series

It is the year 42 AD, and by II. Legion, the most striking unit of the entire Roman army, a new recruit, Quintus Licinius Cato, had just arrived in Germania. A young soldier, ...who until now has dealt primarily with books, not only has to cope with all the hardships of a rigid military regime, but also to face the resistance of his fellow soldiers - then, what's gonna come out, that his contacts at the Emperor's court had appointed him to a higher rank than them.
He becomes Macron's second-in-command, a fearless centurion and a skilled warrior, and must demonstrate far more ability than any other soldier in the coming military actions. They find that after bloody clashes with warriors of the Germanic tribes, their next campaign takes them to a land unmatched in savagery by any other - barbaric Britain. After a long march to the west, Cato and Macro must complete a special mission that will allow them to penetrate the deepest secrets of a conspiracy that aims at nothing less than the overthrow of the Emperor.

Simon Scarrow

Simon Scarrow (1962) was born in Nigeria. On his return to Britain he studied history at the University of East Anglia and then taught at City College Norwich. He specialised in Roman history and organised tours of Roman monuments and museums for his students, during which he deepened his knowledge. Eventually he decided to put all this knowledge to good use and start writing the kind of books he would like to read himself - thrilling military stories from the period of the Roman invasion of Britain. He is best known for the Eagle series, a Roman military fiction set in the Roman Empire, which covers the second invasion of Britain and the subsequent long campaign of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. To date, there are eleven books. He became famous for a series of novels whose protagonists are two Roman soldiers, the experienced warrior Lucius Cornelius Macro and his deputy, the promising young recruit Quintus Licinius Cato, who fight under the sign of the eagle. In addition, he is now working on a new series, "Revolution", set in the Napoleonic and Wellingtonian periods. He eventually gave up his teaching career and writing became his main job. He is married with two sons and lives in Norfolk.
