Tumours of the testicles

The authors summarize all current knowledge regarding prevention, epidemiology, risk factors, diagnosis and treatment of this disease. They are based on their own cohort of patients with testicular tumours, which is the largest in the Czech Republic. Colour publication, which is supplemented by rich pictorial documentation (276 illustrations, 82 tables and graphs), is intended for oncologists, urologists, pathologists, to epidemiologists and primary care physicians. A similar book has not been published in the Czech Republic yet. Co-authors are: doc. MUDr. Ivan Malbohan, CSc., doc. MUDr. Jaroslav Novák, CSc. The book was reviewed by doc. MUDr. Ivan. Kawaciuk, CSc. The historical material is also discussed in great detail, based on well-documented cases dating back to 1947. There is an extensive chapter devoted to the morphology of testicular tumours and a chapter on biochemical markers, which are the most elaborated in this group of tumours. The authors compare different treatment regimens at different times and compare the treatment results achieved, discussing the importance of high-dose chemotherapy. The publication deals comprehensively with the population data available for the diagnosis of testicular cancer in the Czech Republic. For the first time ever, a detailed audit of epidemiological and clinical data of the National Cancer Registry for the entire period of functional data collection, i.e. since 1977, is published. Epidemiological and risk trends are compared with relevant international data. This analysis of population data is complemented by data from a survey of more than 1100 patients and 400 healthy individuals, providing valuable data on the importance of various risk factors in the Czech population. For available population data from the more recent period 1995-2004, the publication provides a definition of a reference population data set for assessing the quality of care for such patients. By filtering out epidemiological records that are not directly related to quality and outcomes of care (DCO, early deaths, autopsy diagnosis, etc. ), a set of patients actually treated for this disease at different clinical stages is defined and described in detail. The reference dataset is published in a form that will allow its further use at regional level or in large healthcare facilities. Using these data, the book evaluates and publishes for the first time in the Czech Republic the results of medical care for this diagnosis, specifically the relative x-year survival rates. These data are compared with results from abroad. The diagnosis of testicular cancer is presented as a basis for predictive assessment of epidemiological trends and related requirements for diagnosis and treatment. A comprehensive model is described and applied to estimate the number of patients treated at a certain clinical stage or in a state of disseminated relapse or progression. Exact estimates of the incidence, mortality and prevalence of patients with this disease are presented for 2007 and beyond.
