Trauma in children

What happens to us in childhood is stored in the depths of our body and our mind forever. We can suppress it, manipulate our own feelings, even memories, but we cannot erase it. The most important thing of all is to understand: then it is possible to work with it with the help of experts and find solutions.

The author summarizes her experience of more than twenty years of working with children. Provides an overview of the current diagnostic classification of trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder. Drawing on the latest findings on the neurobiological context of traumatic experiences, it describes different approaches to therapeutic care for children and the risks of psychotherapy, and compares the health, education and social care systems from these perspectives. Common mistakes, that occur in the diagnosis, are related to a large spread, variability and overlapping symptoms, that translate into emotional ones, cognitive and physical difficulties.
