What does it take to become a vampire? On the battlefields of the American Revolution, Matthew de Clermont meets Marcus MacNeil, a young army doctor from Massachusetts, during a time of political awakening, when the world seems to be on the cusp of a better future. When Matthew offers the young man the chance of immortality and a new life, free from the constraints instilled by his Puritan upbringing, Marcus seizes it and becomes a vampire. Fast-forward to modern-day Paris, where Phoebe Taylor – the young Sotheby’s employee with whom Marcus has fallen in love – is preparing for her own journey to immortality. Although the modern version of the process seems uncomplicated at first, Phoebe and Marcus soon discover that the pitfalls awaiting a human who wants to become a vampire are just as treacherous as they were in the eighteenth century. And the shadows that Marcus believed he had escaped centuries ago may return to haunt them both – forever.
