Three from Jerusalem
An exceptional collection of previously unknown short stories, reports, and essays by Arnošt Lustig, a world-renowned writer, journalist, and humanist. As a young man, Arnošt Lustig (1926–2011) survived the horrors of the Holocaust. His experiences fundamentally shaped his literary work. He wrote these short stories while serving as a war correspondent during the Israeli War of Independence from 1948–1949. Alongside stories from Israel, the book also contains essays and reports reflecting on the Holocaust and exile.
The common denominator of all the texts is the exploration of the feelings and lives of ordinary people under existential pressure. The author captures his characters in extreme and everyday situations, which are nevertheless primarily difficult. He writes in a readable and humane way, with a drama and matter-of-factness, devoid of pathos, that is characteristic of his later work. Lustig offers empathy and timeless wisdom, which are so relevant today.
The texts are powerfully complemented by illustrations from students inspired by Lustig's work. The book features an introduction by Mrs Eva Lustigová, the author's daughter, in which she explains the genesis of the book and the development of Arnošt Lustig as a writer.
