The Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia is undoubtedly one of the darkest periods of our history and countless books have been published about it. This one, however, takes a somewhat different view of the years 1939-1945: Despite all the shadowy and tragic aspects, the inhabitants of the Protectorate lived their private lives, started families, brought children into the world, made love, enjoyed their limited free time... Nor were the thousands of threads of work or official relations broken. After the opening chapter, devoted to the Protectorate and relations between Czechs and Germans in general, we can read many interesting facts about cultural and sporting events, leisure time, media, education, education of children and youth, workload, family finances, urban and rural life, transport, fashion, catering, the role and position of the Church, health care and other issues - all from the perspective of an ordinary Czech or Moravian, who hated the Germans, but mostly he was trying to survive. A special chapter is devoted to the sad history of the Jewish and Roma ethnic groups. This publication, which is the second volume of the new series of the publishing house ČAS, dedicated to our history and called Czech TIME, brings a new and very interesting view of life in the Protectorate, and not just because of the engaging text, but also thanks to more than eighty reproductions. It should therefore not be missing in the library of those who are interested in our modern history, and it can provide a particularly powerful and at the same time readable account of the period for children and young people.
