Things
The role of women in history was much more active and diverse than we think.
Annabelle Hirsch tells history through things that belonged to or were intended for women. One hundred objects represent norms and myths, but also symbolise female emancipation. We can read about curious objects, for example, a glass dildo from the sixteenth century or a metal corset, but also about completely ordinary things, like a typewriter or a bicycle. These objects tell the stories of unknown women, artists, intellectuals and contemporary celebrities, from courtesans and slaves to Hannah Arendt and Kim Kardashian. The short stories of the individual items shed new light on the role of women in history and prove that women have never stood on the sidelines of history, they just weren't paid attention to.
