The story of Russian geopolitics

Throughout history, Russian thinkers, geographers, and statesmen have come up with visions about the role and civilizational affiliation of their great country. At the same time, they revealed the ambiguity of the geographical and value framework of Russian statehood and the identity of Russian society. The fumbling between East, West, and various forms of geopolitical independence has always been reflected in Russia' s practical foreign and domestic policies. Jaroslav Kurfürst offers a careful look into the labyrinth of Russian geopolitical thinking, which allows us to understand its political origins. It shows that the hybrid war that Russia is waging against the world of liberal democracy and Western institutions mobilizes deep-seated motivations and myths of both the Tsarist and Soviet eras. The relationship between Russia and the West is discussed in this exceptionally argumentative monograph as a constant clash of two different geopolitical cultures.
