The Spiral of Futility

At the turn of 1940 and 1941, Brno is a city of shadows where everyday life submits to the will of the occupiers. After returning from a concentration camp, Bruno tries to find solid ground under his feet again, but only the ruins of his former life await him. His closest friend, Žanek, meanwhile, teeters on the edge of life and death, broken by alcohol and a guilty conscience, while Bruno seeks solace in his love for Eliška. When they meet up again with Čára, a fellow inmate from the camp, these three young men decide to defy their oppressors and strike a blow against those who took their future, to break free from the seemingly endless spiral of futility that grips not only them but the entire city, country, and a generation. Can friendship, love, and the desire for freedom endure in a time when hope is extinguished faster than life itself?
