The Shekel Years

Sex, relationships and the search for freedom in nineties Israel

What led a young Jewish man from Ostrava to move to Israel in the 1990s? David Shorf recalls how he got to know the local culture in the promised land, searched for his true self, hung out in bars and picked up girls. What worked (and what didn't) on a Yemeni waitress, an Iraqi-Russian drummer, a Brazilian sex bomb, or a Doctor of Philosophy from Buenos Aires? Why did he take the worst temp jobs in human history? But most importantly: Why is everything in Israel "a bit of the West and a bit of the Orient"? You'll find out in this book, which is worth every shekel.

David Shorf

He served in the Israeli army, was the deputy editor-in-chief of Lidové noviny, played in Bořek Slezáček's band Raketa, owns an advertising agency, and is a relationship coach. What to make of it all? He says of himself that the most powerful experience, which nothing has yet surpassed, was his time in the IDF (Israeli Defence Forces). It was there that he found out what he was really made of. "You can never know in advance how you will behave in extreme situations. For example, you might think that if someone were drowning under the ice, you would be a coward and afraid to help them. Then the situation happens, and you jump in. Or you don't. You never know who you are beforehand," says Shorf. As he has always been interested in relationships, whether in group dynamics or between couples, it is not so surprising that the work that now fulfils him is coaching. Unlike advertising, he sees meaning in it. He is married to therapist Kristýna and has two children from a previous marriage.
