It is usually darkest under a candle. Let alone in a cemetery! The first part of the detective trilogy is the debut of Magnesia Litera award winner Pavla Horáková.
Just a few steps away from the famous Prague shopping centre is the Olšany Cemetery, whose pensive nature attracts the attention of 14-year-old Klara. However, a kindly encouragement from the old lady Anežka is enough and the girl soon finds herself among a handful of peers who are attracted to the ivy silence as much as she is, because they observe it from the windows of their homes day after day. The newly-formed group, which includes Vojta, Simon, Evžen and later his sister Běta, will renew the ancient tradition of the Gravediggers standing guard over the peace of the Olšany dead. Thanks to the famous dead, the cemetery will remind them not only of memorable moments in our history, but will also unravel the tangle of family histories, the clues of which have been literally under the children's noses until now. Before the dedicated five searchers uncover everything in the time between All Souls' Day and the June heat, they experience a series of perilous moments, for something nefarious is afoot among the tombstones. Will old woman Agnes help again?
The first part of the Gravediggers detective trilogy is far from an advocacy of black emo. The debut of the Magnesia Litera award winner follows the white magic of the adventures undertaken by the Vinohrady classics František Langer and Jaroslav Foglar with observant children.
The author's book The Theory of Weirdness won the 2019 Magnesia Litera award for prose.
