The Red Shed

Grandfather from Dream Island An unsentimental, humorously written story about the friendship between a young boy and an old man who are bound together by loneliness. Misha's father reads the telegram in disbelief: "Your ordered Skoda MB 1000 is available for pick-up tomorrow." Joy knows no bounds, the first family car. Dad falls so in love with his dream car that he starts looking for a suitable shelter - a garage. In the basement apartment, an old sick man counts change. 14.60 won't be enough for rent. His thoughts run to whether he could sell the old shed that belongs to him. Even with an old slingshot and lots of treasures that will make a boy's heart happy. The agreement between Miša's parents and old Mr. Andrýs was not easy, but the longer it lasted, the more Miša and "grandfather" became closer. He felt like he was on a dream island. His older friend had a boy's heart and remembered well his childhood and later desires. And so they both dreamed and understood each other more and more. The story is laced with sadness and humour, dreams and reality. Moreover, it is written in a remarkable language; Ota Hofman has managed to capture the memories of an old man running in rapid succession in an almost surrealistic way. Recommended not only for children, but also for parents.
