The No Rules Rule

The groundbreaking company culture that helped Netflix conquer the world

It doesn’t matter how hard you work. Stop checking up on your subordinates. Always say what you think of others. And never, ever try to please your boss.
At first glance, Netflix's corporate culture seems too radical to work in the real world. Yet it's what enabled Netflix to transform itself from a DVD rental service into a streaming powerhouse with 195 million customers that produces Oscar-winning films.
Netflix is one of the greatest business success stories in history. However, its unprecedented company rules didn't come with fame and billion-dollar revenues. On the contrary, for example, the rule to “pay top of market” was introduced by Netflix during a financial crisis when the company was facing bankruptcy. That's when CEO Reed Hastings realised that one expensive, top-notch employee could replace several average ones, saving costs in the process.
This management guide for the 21st century shows a new way to lead a company in a rapidly changing world. Anyone who doesn't want to end up like Kodak or Nokia and who strives for high productivity or innovation will find a clear and concrete guide on how to achieve it.
