The Natural History of Imperfection
Although documentary films may make us think that there is no place for imperfection in nature, the opposite is true. In his inspiring and concise treatise, Italian philosopher and evolution expert Telmo Pievani clearly shows that imperfection is omnipresent and without it, not only would there not be diverse life on Earth, but the Solar System, and indeed the universe itself, would not have come into being. Evolution works with what is at hand, rather than creating new structures from scratch. And although the result is imperfect, like the human brain, the important thing is that it works - albeit not always completely reliably. Based on an examination of the world from the Big Bang to human evolution, Pievani presents six laws of imperfection that summarize its enormous significance.
