The last monarch of the Přemyslid dynasty, Wenceslas III, is killed, threatening to plunge the Kingdom of Bohemia into complete chaos. The widow of the murdered king, Queen Viola of Teschen, entrusts her personal confidant and advisor, Christopher, a monk of the Benedictine order, with the task of finding the king's murderer. There are more than enough people who could have benefited from the monarch's death, and Brother Christopher, assigned a centurion of the royal guards, Blahota, as his guide and assistant, discovers that a truly superhuman burden has been placed upon him.
