The mists of Öland
The mystery of the boy who disappeared from the misty wastelands of Öland
It's a cold day at the end of summer. A little boy carefully climbs over a stone wall by a lonely house. He looks out over the grassy landscape of Öland, steps into the mist, and vanishes without a trace... No one—not his family, not the police—ever sees him again.
Twenty years later, Julia, the missing boy's mother, receives a strange message from her father: she must return to Öland to help him search for his lost grandson. He has received a parcel in the post containing the boy's shoe. The dark past returns painfully, and Julia is determined to uncover the secret on her own. However, she soon discovers that someone is trying to stop her investigation at any cost. Could it be the supposed murderer, Nils Kant, a man who should have been dead long ago? Many people still believe that this man wanders the wastelands of Öland to this day, appearing when the hour of shadows comes and the voices of the dead are heard...
Johan Theorin
Johan Theorin was born on 3 September 1963 in Gothenburg. From childhood, he spent every summer on the island of Öland, which had a fateful influence on his later literary work. His mother's family, which consisted mainly of sailors, fishermen, and farmers, had lived there for centuries and nurtured the island's heritage, mysterious tales, and folklore. This almost mystical environment inspired him to create a series of stories in which he masterfully combines the genius loci of Öland with a detective plot. He currently lives in Gothenburg and works as a journalist. This is one of the reasons why he is often compared to Stieg Larsson. The author began his literary career by writing short stories for various magazines and anthologies. His first novel, Skumtimmen (The Hour of the Shadow, published as Echoes from the Dead in the UK), was not published until the spring of 2007 and immediately became a bestseller. It has since been published in twenty countries, including Germany, the USA, Brazil, Thailand, and Slovakia, and in 2007 it won the Swedish Crime Writers' Academy award for Best Crime Novel of the Year. This first part of an intended loose tetralogy was followed in 2008 by the novel Nattfåk (The Darkest Room), which also received many awards. Among others, it was named the best Swedish crime novel of 2008, received the Glass Key Award in 2009, and the CWA International Dagger in 2010. The third part of the series, Blodläge (The Quarry), was published in 2010, and the author is currently working on the final part of the series.
