The logic of night fishing
Truth is like a fish under the water - we have to shine a light on the sea of lies in order for it to be revealed...
Giovanna Guarrasi is no longer in charge of the Organised Crime Detection Unit in Palermo, but she is certainly not idle in her new post near Etna. A murder case with an eyewitness has just landed on her desk - but the corpse and any other evidence are missing. And the prominent lawyer at whose luxury beachfront villa the crime was supposed to have taken place is said to be in the dark. So the determined Sicilian investigator, nicknamed Vanina by those close to her, enlists the help of retired Inspector Patane, a walking encyclopaedia of local gossip, old sins and family ties. Together, they begin to uncover the cracks in the seemingly perfect lives of the local elite, including the disappeared dead man, and soon realise they're in for a real catch.
A true Italian detective story with elements of noir and procedural thriller, full of Sicilian colours and flavours. The second volume of the successful book series that became the basis for the TV series Vanina - Un vicequestore a Catania.
"A great read. Scalia maintains the high standard set in the first episode. Vanina is a character you will fall in love with, and her collaboration with retired commissioner Patan creates a perfect dynamic." - IBS.it
"The author writes briskly and with such ease that you will be reluctant to put the book down. Moreover, you will quickly grow to like the brilliantly drawn characters. And even those characters you don't expect at the beginning." - Literary h(l)ody - Mr. Kaplan's book blog
"'He who sows fear sows hate. And sooner or later hatred will sow revenge. ' That is the main memento of this thriller. Scalia sets the novel almost entirely in his native Catania, which is not just a backdrop but a living part of the narrative." - Libroguerriero magazine
"A readable whodunit set in the southern corner of Italy, where time passes differently than anywhere else with the sight of smoldering Etna. The story is lightened by the banter of friends and colleagues and so many lilting Italian treats that you almost forget that people are dying here. Until the author reminds you." - The Detective Centre
"The investigation is superbly constructed with just the right amount of suspense and unexpected twists. The writing style is economical, fast and accurate. It may be a modern detective story, but it has the charm of the old days." - QLibri
