The Lexical Tones of Vietnamese Metropoles
Lexical tone is a phenomenon not well known in our country. While in Czech and other non-tonal languages a word is made up of only a string of consonants and vowels, in tonal languages a specific melodic feature must be added to make the word complete. After introducing the general principles of tone production and perception, the book outlines the outline of the sound plan of Vietnamese, i.e. its segmental and prosodic system. The core of the monograph is a contrastive analysis of the tones of contemporary Vietnamese Hanoi and Saigon. The description of the produced tones is complemented by a perceptual experiment, the results of which illustrate the complex relationships in the tonal systems of both dialects.
