The Last Love of Emperor Charles

The novel deals with the forgotten fate of Guillaume, the only historically documented left-hand man of Emperor Charles IV. The Bohemian king and Roman emperor met Guillaume's mother probably in 1365 during one of his trips to Avignon, where he was repeatedly led by his efforts to push for the return of the papal see to Rome. He stood at the pinnacle of power and achieved much, if not everything, as ruler - he had just managed to suppress the growing opposition to his power by a successful diplomatic move. Yet, at nearly fifty years of age, he was aware that he lacked a deep emotional relationship in his life - and at a moment when he had almost given up the dream of personal happiness, he met the charming and noble Margaret of Arles, with whom he spent idyllic days. On his return to Prague, he learns that Margareta has given birth to his son Guillaume. "Bastard! Imperial bastard!" shouted one of the ragged men at Guillaume from a respectful distance. They had followed him on his clandestine expedition to Avignon as an unwelcome escort, hardly realizing that Guillaume was here today without the supervision of Rufus or any of the other gunmen.
