The hornet flies at night

Take an old biplane and fly across the sea. A crazy plan that just had to work.

The year is 1941 and the war situation is not looking promising for the British RAF – one Allied bomber after another comes crashing down in a hail of Nazi anti-aircraft fire. But how can the Germans be so well informed about the movement of British aircraft? At the same time, on the small island of Sande, a young Dane named Harald Olufsen discovers something suspicious and soon realises he can't keep it to himself. But the icy waves of the North Sea lie between him and Britain. Harald manages to acquire an old Hornet Moth biplane that could help him escape, but... can such a machine even be flown? Ken Follett has constructed another masterful war story, inspired by a true event – in June 1941, pilots Thomas C. Sneum and Kjeld Pedersen escaped from the Danish island of Funen in the same way, crossing the North Sea to join the RAF. www.ken-follett.com

Ken Follett

KEN FOLLETT (born 1949, Cardiff, Wales) studied philosophy at University College London and then worked as a reporter for the South Wales Echo and the Evening News. He soon turned to writing and became a popular and respected author of crime and espionage stories (The Man from St. Petersburg, Jackdaws, Hornet Flight, Whiteout, A Place Called Freedom, and more). However, it was his sweeping historical novels set in the medieval town of Kingsbridge that brought him worldwide popularity: The Pillars of the Earth (1989), which topped The New York Times bestseller list again eighteen years after its first publication; World Without End (2007), which became the world's bestselling title of 2008; and A Column of Fire (2017). The first two books were adapted into television series. The author's successful trilogy mapping the turbulent history of the last century, simply titled The Century Trilogy (Fall of Giants, Winter of the World, Edge of Eternity), was also a great success.
