The History of Love
A novel from one of the three most prominent young American writers (alongside Dave Eggers and Jonathan Safran Foer). It is not often that the second novel of a woman barely thirty years old attracts attention months before its publication. The History of Love, following the fates of several characters set in contemporary New York and returning to the time of the Second World War, does not shy away from dark humour and building tension, which revolves mainly around a lost manuscript – all these motifs are among the unmistakable hallmarks of the author's refined style. Nicole Krauss's Jewish grandparents came from four different countries; The History of Love is therefore not only a brilliant version of the American immigrant story but, in its scope, inspiration, and ambition, also a cosmopolitan novel. Or, perhaps even more so, it is what its title promises: a history of love.
