The heart of a hooligan
Adolescence between bans and beats
The Slovácko countryside, the oppressive atmosphere of the Normalisation era, and a boy searching for a more joyful side of the world through independent culture and his own little “on the road” adventures. First loves are eternally clumsy, and the days flash by like images from a carousel: a harsh father, an apprenticeship, a factory, a river and a large gravel pit with crystal-clear water. And above all, the longed-for escapes to official and secret concerts, where a cup of beer, a battered guitar and a sleeping bag are all it takes for happiness—until the truncheons of the Public Security officers come into play.
Větříšek's narrative has the hallmarks of a good documentary. It is the “true story” of a generation for whom music was the allure of freedom, courage and hope. At the same time, it is a raw yet moving book about growing up, about tenderness and the hardships of youth—and above all, about how to live life to the fullest even in unappealing times.
What they wrote about the book:
At first, you get the impression that he's just another witness of his generation, but then you read on, and you're won over by his gentle sifting through past times, something almost everyone can understand, and suddenly you come to a point where a sunny summer day turns into a tragedy... Captivated, you keep turning the pages and think to yourself, this is more than a work of local provenance, this is not just an occasional writer, this book was created by an author...
- Martin Stöhr, editor
I carry the stories in my head. I am a witness. I've been to countless concerts by bands that have long since stopped playing, with singers and musicians who are no longer with us. It bothers me how the former regime is written about in black and white. It wasn't black and white. I tried to give a truthful and honest description of that era.

Lubomír Větříšek
(b. 1964) lives in Strážnice. He originally wrote his successful debut, Dva roky v hajzlu (Two Years in the Shitter) (2021), in which he reminisces about his compulsory military service in the Czechoslovak People's Army, purely for the amusement of his friends. He is a fan of blues, rock and folk music. In the 1980s, he attended many permitted and forbidden concerts, which is reflected in his work.
