The Great War with the Crusaders

The battle fought on 15 July 1410 at Grunwald was one of the largest knightly engagements of the European Middle Ages. It took place during the war between the Polish-Lithuanian Union, led by King Władysław II Jagiełło, and the Order of the Teutonic Knights. In this “Great War”, as contemporary chroniclers called it, Polish forces and their allies ended the Order's expansionist policy in north-eastern Europe.
The Battle of Grunwald itself is known by various names. The Poles call it the Battle of Grunwald, in Lithuanian it is known as the Battle of Žalgiris, in Belarusian chronicles it is written as Dubrovno, and in German literature it is traditionally referred to as Tannenberg, after the opposite village which today has the official Polish name of Stębark.
The Great War with the Teutonic Knights took place between 1409–1411 and, in addition to the Battle of Grunwald, had several key stages and dramatic events, which are described in this book. Alongside the main figure of Władysław II Jagiełło, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, the reader will also discover the fates of successful and less successful politicians, military commanders and grand masters. The author pays special attention to the Teutonic Order in Prussia and the internal development of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. He offers a detached assessment of the highs and lows of the crusaders' fateful defeat and the famous victor of Grunwald.
In 2010, Poland celebrated the 600th anniversary of an event that has become an almost symbolic milestone in the nation's history. The victory at Grunwald still evokes emotion today and has often been politically exploited in the past.
