The game of inheritance
The novel is set in the United States in the late 19th century and tells the story of a group of six random citizens who, after the death of Chicago millionaire and member of the local Eccentric Club William J. Hypperbone's are played by the so-called. a "goose game" for a sixty-million-dollar inheritance, not as a parlor game in a room, but as an adventurous journey across the United States, whose map is redrawn like a game board. The players' progress across this board is then (as in a real "goose game") determined by a roll of the dice, but under the supervision of a notary. According to the addendum to Hypperbone's will, a mystery player known only as "XKZ" will participate in the game in addition to the players drawn.
And so, according to the whims of the dice, the players travel, cross between states, visit beautiful places, but also spend time in prison. And all this with the desire to be first in the finish line and to get the dream inheritance.
Everything turns out in the end in a totally unexpected way, including a totally unexpected winner. Who is he? We're not giving it away.
