After the unexpected death of Rudolph of Habsburg called Kas, Henry of Carinthia, husband of the eldest daughter of Wenceslas II, returned to the Czech throne. Anna Premyslovna. Melichar of Roupov remains in his service as a royal judge, but his position is very uncertain. The new abbot of Strahov monastery, Gerard, a Frenchman, asks him to investigate the mysterious murders of the Strahov Premonstratensians, which seem to have been committed by the devil himself. What kind of hell is going on at Strahov? Does someone want to expel the Premonstratensian Order from here? Judge Melichar and his assistant Bozhech face a difficult task. At the same time, the volatile King Henry of Carinthia threatens to deprive them of their office if they do not solve the mysterious case in the monastery. It might be a relief for Melichar, but his vanity won't allow him to give up the search for the mysterious murderers or the murderer.
