The Days I Loved You Most
In this moving story, we meet two seventy-year-olds, Evelyn and Joseph. They have known each other their whole lives. They grew up together, started a family, raised three children, ran a guesthouse, and have retired. But for much of her life, Evelyn doubted whether it was the life she had envisioned for herself. She longed to pursue music and travel, but instead, she took care of guests and raised children. Joseph never doubted anything; his family and the guesthouse were the meaning of his life.
Evelyn starts to experience health problems and is eventually diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. This frightens her all the more because her mother suffered from Alzheimer's disease, and the family witnessed her lose her memories and habits, and fail to recognise her loved ones. The idea of losing her world, her family, and herself is unimaginable for Evelyn, and she decides she would rather depart with dignity. Joseph cannot imagine life without her, so he begins to plan their departure with her.
They tell their children that they have one year left to live, which they want to enjoy with them and their grandchildren. They reminisce about their childhood, their parents, events during the war, their life together, problems in their marriage, conflicts with their children, and life by the sea. Their children don't understand and disagree with their decision to leave voluntarily. However, they begin to see their own lives through the lens of their parents' deep love and start to understand that there is no Evelyn without Joseph, and no Joseph without Evelyn. But man proposes…
