The Cursed Land
Even the dark past will one day come to light
This time Michaela Klevisová has abandoned the criminal Josef Bergman and in her novel from Pošumaví she looks at crime through the eyes of two young women whose lives are intertwined with the places where dramatic history has repeatedly swept through. The run-down village of Jelení Hora has a dark past and is still not an ideal place to live. No wonder Gerda always wanted to leave here and escape her past. But now she is divorced, penniless and has no choice but to return to her parents' poor house with her daughter. Linda comes to the same place on vacation to search for her family's past, which moved away forty years ago. Then a death occurs in the village and the two women discover a closely guarded secret connected to a land where no one was meant to be happy.
In this book, the author of a successful detective series focuses on interpersonal relationships in a setting adjacent to a national park and military area instead of a crime plot. Despite the history of the local inhabitants, it reveals a history full of twists and turns that prevented some from taking root in these places and unintentionally tied others to Pošumava.
Awards received: Czech Book Award, 2022, nomination for the Czech Book Award 2021

They wrote about the book:
. Michaela Klevisová has created a work that is great in its ordinariness and proves that she belongs among the top of the contemporary Czech literary scene, because only the best writers can play out a powerful story with a significant overlap on a small playground.

The author builds up a slightly chilling and dark atmosphere from the very beginning of the novel and never leaves this mysterious aura throughout.
