Dita is at the end of her tether
On the day of her birth, the drunken fates Wrath, Thirst and Ferment predicted that the main character, Dita Hamáčková, would be an absolute good-for-nothing and marry a prize alcoholic from the borderlands—a catastrophic existence. And so it came to pass, for, as we all know, you cannot escape your destiny. The neurotic Dita is celebrating her fiftieth birthday, which is a big enough disaster for any woman on its own, but she also has to deal with an unexpected gift from her daughter—a completely uncontrollable hunting dog. In an instant, the dog demolishes the already bleak interior of her country cottage and turns her life upside down. But other troubles soon follow: due to her dire financial situation, Dita is desperately looking for a job. She finds one at an obscure publishing house full of eccentric employees. Add to that her husband's passion for alcohol and motorbikes, and the fact that her daughter and son-in-law have sold their flat and are moving with their toddler into Dita's tiny house, and it is no wonder that the main character is, as they say, at the end of her tether.
Eva Michorová
A native of Kladno, she graduated from the local grammar school and then the Faculty of Journalism at Charles University. She worked for a wide range of newspapers and magazines, from Kladenský kovák at Poldi SONP Kladno to the ancient legendary Dikobraz and, for example, Nedělní Blesk. This distinctive environment, full of curious, often half-mad characters, inspired her to write, along with her original family. She became known to readers as the author of novels for girls and humorous novels, including *Čekání na prince* (Waiting for a Prince, 1996), *Bára ze zámku* (Bára from the Castle, 1997), *Kdo mi dá růži?* (Who Will Give Me a Rose?, 1999), *Nikoho se nepros* (Don't Beg Anyone, 2000), *Samá voda* (All Water, 2001), *Tak co, holky, co si počnete?* (So, Girls, What Will You Do?, 2001), *Jedna jediná noc s inženýrem Kuželem* (One Single Night with Engineer Kužel, 2004), *Přece nemůžeš zastřelit tchána* (You Can't Shoot Your Father-in-Law, 2020) and others. She is the co-author of the parenting book *Přinesl nás čáp, asi* (A Stork Brought Us, I Think, 1992) and the book on gambling *Hříchy velkých hráčů* (Sins of High Rollers, 2000), and she contributed to the collection of true crime stories *A teď padáme, rejžo* (And Now We're Out of Here, Director, 1998). By some miracle, she is still married and is currently a happy grandmother.
